Historical Renovation of Building 427

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District selected Satterfield & Pontikes Construction for the renovation of Building 427 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Built in the 1920s,
the load-bearing brick and stone building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
and was renovated and modified for reuse as office space. The project preserved many of the
building’s historic architectural features, including original wood trim and hardwood floors, original terrazzo flooring, and exterior window assemblies.

The scope of work included:
• LEED Certification and accessibility standards
• New ground-source heat pump mechanical system and fire sprinkler systems
• New parking lot and sidewalks, driveway repair, new utilities
• Upgrades necessary to meet requirements of current building codes
• Repair of the adjacent gazebo, including new copper roof
• Demolition and abatement

This project was developed for a sustainable rating of LEED Certified. The U.S. Green Building
Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) provisions included:
• Recycled content at least 20 percent of the total materials cost
• Minimum of 10 percent of materials from within a 500-mile radius of job site
• Minimum of 50 percent wood-based materials certified in accordance with Forest Stewardship Council standards (FSC STD 01 001)
• High-reflective roof surface
• Heating efficiencies through ground-source heat pump system
