North Cascades Environmental Learning Center

Diablo, WA

Dawson Construction

This project included new construction of 16 educational-use structures located at the water's edge of Diablo Lake in North Cascades National Park in Washington State. The structures were built on existing pads formerly occupied by cabins that housed the construction crews that built nearby Ross Dam. Owned by Seattle City Light, the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center is operated by the North Cascades Institute; a non-profit organization offering education on conservation and restoration of the natural and cultural history of the Pacific Northwest. The Learning Center features meeting spaces, multi-media classrooms, a library, outdoor amphitheater, a dining hall complete with a recycling and composting center, and overnight accommodations. The Learning Center received LEED Silver Certification for its design strategies and features many sustainable building materials such as: salvaged, recycled, regionally manufactured and harvested materials, and FSC-Certified wood.
